Anti-Psalm 119 (Kaph)

My soul longs for approval;
     I hope in myself.
My eyes search for affirmation;
     I ask of everyone: "Will you love me?"
My heart is tanned like leather—
     dry, with a passing appearance of life.
Why must I crave what never comes?
     I want to be lovely, not loved.
I hunger after significance,
     only to be met with silence.
I work hard, ingratiate myself, sharpen my wit;
     but the inner ring eludes me.
I will seek approval and die trying,
    but I will not forsake my quest.
Affirmation brings the illusion of life,
    significance a mirage of wholeness.
